Two students from the University of Wolverhampton have made it through to the semi-finals of the English Comedian of the Year competition.

Final year drama students, Sami Cornick and Natalie Sharrock, known as Sami and Tilly, have also reached the semi finals of The Laughing Horse New Act of the Year.

Head of department, Dr Ruth Shade, who runs the comedy stream of modules, said: “Their act is made up of parodies of popular songs with lyrics rewritten by the duo. Sami is an accomplished musician and both students are fine singers, and they combine ribald humour with sweet harmonies.

“With this success they are following in the footsteps of Raving Loonies Stole My Heart, who, while still students in the drama department, reached the final of the BBC’s Upstaged competition in 2008.”

The semi finals of the English Comedian of the Year will take place on Monday April 6, with the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year on April 18.

The pair discovered their abilities as a double act while working on a second year comic performance module. Since their debut at The Newhampton Pub last year they have been appearing regularly throughout the Midlands to great acclaim.

Sami and Tilly’s act can be seen at the Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton, on Friday, 24 April 2009, as part of a comedy bill made up of third year drama students who have developed their performances for their Professional Practice module.
