Students to debate funding

 

The event is part of the National Union of Students’ (NUS) priority campaign on higher education funding. The UWSU will be one of hundreds of unions taking part nationally in the campaign, Broke and Broken, to highlight levels of student debt caused by inconsistencies in higher education funding across the country.

 

The Great Wolverhampton Higher Education Funding Debate comes ahead of the 2009 government review of the funding system which could potentially see the cap on tuition fees rise above its’ current level of £3,145 a year.

 

Students, members of the University Executive and Board of Governors, NUS, the Chief Executive of Million+ Pam Tatlow, local business people and special guest, Wolverhampton MP Rob Marris will attend the debate, which aims to bring the campaign to the forefront of issues facing the University of Wolverhampton and the city of Wolverhampton.

 

UWSU Welfare and Campaigns Vice-President, Caroline Rose, said: “With the looming 2009 review of higher education funding it is vital that we are able to identify a joint University and Union position. We will then have a stronger voice locally and nationally.

 

“UWSU will be debating two different issues on the day as well as hearing from inspirational speakers about their views of the future. The debate will look to gage the opinions of all attendees and arrive at an overall position for Wolverhampton going into the 2009 review.”

 

The debate will take place in the Arena Theatre at the University of Wolverhampton on Friday 21 November between 1.45pm and 4.45pm.
