Global health and national security lecture

The impact of global health scares on national security will be the subject of the first public lecture in the new series at the University of Wolverhampton.

The popular free lecture series opens with a guest lecture by Professor Colin McInnes, Head of the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University.

He will discuss how crises such as SARS and bird flu have made people increasingly aware that health is no longer solely a national issue but a global concern.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday 8 October 2008 at 6pm, in the Millennium City Building lecture theatre at Wolverhampton City Campus.

Professor McInnes said: “Developments elsewhere in the world can have a profound effect on UK health, requiring a global perspective. But equally the UK and other governments are also thinking of health in terms of national security – whether in terms of bio-terrorism or pandemic flu.

“As a consequence of these developments, health issues have begun to appear on the agendas of foreign and security policy elites. My lecture will look at how this happened and what are the consequences.”

Professor Colin McInnes is Head of the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University and UNESCO Professor of HIV/AIDS Education and Security in Africa.
