New recognition for volunteering

Student volunteers will receive extra recognition for their hard work and commitment through two new schemes at the University.

Active Volunteers and the Students’ Union have joined forces to launch a Volunteering Certificate to acknowledge the importance of volunteering.

The certificate covers all volunteering carried out, whether a student completes just a few hours of volunteering or is a long-term volunteer who commits a large proportion of their time to volunteering.

In addition, a Volunteer of the Year Award is being launched to celebrate outstanding contribution to the community. To be eligible for the award, which is sponsored by The Midcounties Co-operative, students must complete a minimum of 50 hours volunteering. Nominations will be open from January 2009.

Pat Green, Co-ordinator for Active Volunteers, said: “The Volunteer of the Year award and Volunteering Certificate recognise the achievements and transferable skills developed which enhance employability. Certificates will be recorded on students’ transcripts when they graduate, demonstrating the additional experience gained, alongside academic achievements.”
