University honorary degrees announced

Stars from the world of sport, fashion and television are to receive honorary awards during the University’s Graduation ceremonies this year.
 
Five-times Wimbledon champion Frew McMillan, from South Africa, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure. Frew won five Wimbledon Doubles titles (three Men’s and two Mixed) and 10 majors, including the French and US Open Men’s and Mixed Doubles.
 
Also set to be honoured with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Design is Barbara Hulanicki, the founder of the iconic 60s fashion label Biba. Barbara said she was “absolutely thrilled” to be honoured by the School of Art & Design.
 
BBC broadcaster and former Newsnight anchorman Peter Hobday will receive a Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters, and former nursery nurse Lisa Potts, who survived a machete attack at a Wolverhampton school in 1996, will receive an Honorary Fellowship for her charity work.
 
The 2008 University of Wolverhampton Graduations take place at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre from Monday, September 1, 2008.
 
University of Wolverhampton Vice Chancellor, Professor Caroline Gipps, said: “We are delighted to award honorary degrees and fellowships to people who have made a significant contribution to their field. This year’s awards are particularly varied, with people from education, healthcare and sport receiving honours.”
 
The 16 honorary awardees include founders of local charities, prominent businessmen and former University of Wolverhampton staff. The full list is below:

Nancy Kirkland, President of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science.

School of Engineering and the Built Environment

Jonathan Falkingham RIBA, Chief Executive and joint founder of the Urban Splash property development group, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Design.

School of Art and Design

Barbara Hulanicki, founder of Biba and interior designer, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Design and Ruth Lingford, animation film maker, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Arts.

School of Education

Camila Batmangheligjh, psychoanalyst and founder of Kids Company, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Social Science; Pamela Worton, retired University of Wolverhampton Walsall Campus Registrar, Honorary Fellowship; Mick Waters, Director of Curriculum at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Education and John Mathias, former Dean of the University of Wolverhampton School of Education, Honorary Fellowship.

University of Wolverhampton Business School

John Edwards, former Chief Executive of Advantage West Midlands, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Studies and Mark Palmer, Global Brand Director of Green and Black’s organic chocolate, Honorary Degree of Master of Business Administration.

School of Applied Sciences

Lisa Potts, former nursery nurse and founder of Wolverhampton children’s charity Believe 2 Achieve, Honorary Fellowship.

School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure

Frew McMillan, Wimbledon doubles tennis champion, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science and Peter Hobday, BBC broadcaster, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters.

Ann Reaney, founder of Wolverhampton women’s hostel Jericho House and Senior Citizen Link Line, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters.
