School of Applied Sciences
Wan Li Low, BSc (Hons) Biotechnology
"I am living my dream by studying in the UK and in choosing Wolverhampton, a well established University with good facilities, I made a very good choice.
"I completed the first year of my degree in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia. I heard about Wolverhampton University, among others, through the University’s
South East Asia Regional Office
which took part in a road show at my University in KL. My first choice was Wolverhampton as I felt I would get an excellent education here. I entered the second year of the degree and gained a first class honours degree in Biotechnology. I then competed for and gained a PhD research studentship in Microbiology which I started in October 2007.
My Degree Course
"I have found all the staff to be brilliant. They are really helpful, friendly and they always provide adequate guidance and motivation to encourage students to produce quality work without putting too much pressure on us. I studied in an English speaking school in KL, thus I did not experience a language barrier. Studying here is made easier as the lecturers recognise our needs as international students studying in our second language in a foreign country. The library provides a good place to study and the online facilities are excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the degree as the material is interesting and it prepared me well for my research PhD post.
Accommodation
"Clean, basic and quite adequate is how I would describe the accommodation. Once you have personalised your room, it is home from home. The cleaners come every day to clean the showers and toilets and once a week to clean the communal kitchens. By living in Halls I have made many new friends from different countries worldwide. We love to meet up in the evenings and often cook and share our favourite foods.
The City of Wolverhampton and the Climate
"There is plenty to see and do in the city which also comes with good shopping facilities. West Park is a great place to exercise or enjoy some green space. Everything is within walking distance from the University and Halls.
"The weather is much cooler here than in KL. It is like having air conditioning outside which I personally find refreshing as the weather in KL is a bit too hot for me. The first time I saw snow was amazing!
Social and Hobbies
"I worked for the Students’ Union, where I was the student information assistant, I have also worked for the International Office where I helped to organise the weekend day trips for students. I volunteered to help in open days and to organise parties like the Chinese New Year party for international students. I have made so many friends through these activities and learnt so much about the British Culture as well as other cultures from around the world."
