Mental Health Advice & Guidance

"Anyone can experience emotional distress or mental health problems. The important thing is to know that you can get through tough times and know how to seek support.

Emotional intensity will pass and those stresses that are building your emotional intensity can be heard and resolved."


We have created an advice section on how to keep yourself safe should you experience acute distress:

Stage 1: Distracting yourself

Distracting techniques such as listening to music you enjoy and going for a walk or writing can relax you and clear your head of stress.

Alternatively, writing a "worry list", noting all the things that are driving your distress at the moment and break it down into bite size chunks. Allowing you to see what you need to do to resolve some of these worries.

For Example: 'You are struggling with the amount of deadlines you have due. An action could be to speak to the module leaders and your personal tutor to gain some advice and assistance. Or developing a study plan that breaks down your deadlines into bite size and achievable goals.

Stage 2: Talk it through

Don't bottle up worries or stresses. Contacting a friend for a chat and planning a day out with them or contacting one of the University's facilities below and talk through your distress. You can tell them how you are feeling and won't be judged.

Remember that we all have physical health and we all have mental health, and we don't have to have a diagnosis with either category to feel unwell, tired and overwhelmed.

The University offers several facilities that can help you through the difficult times while studying at the University:

* The Chaplaincy

* The Student Enabling Centre

* The Student's Union


We also offer a Safeguarding App "Uniguard" that has many useful features for your safety and welfare.

If you wish to speak to an outside organisation we recommend:

The Samaritans - avaliable 24hrs a day 7days a week

* Staying Safe - with useful tips and advice about your Mental Health & the 'U Can Cope' online resource for people in distress.

Stage 3: Medical Advice

If you still feel distress then we suggest contacting your GP or 101 and explaining how distressed you feel. If you have a mental health professional involved in your care due to a prior diagnosis: consider also contacting this service to alert them to how you are feeling.

We strongly advise students to register with a GP that they can access readily whilst studying. This is to ensure your physical or mental health can be addressed as soon as possible.

Stage 4: Emergency

If you are in danger as a results of your thoughts and distress, for example if you have done something to harm yourself, then please ringing the emergency services on 999 or attending A & E. If you are on University premises you can also call security on 01902 32(2106) to offer intermediate support.
