Biomedical science

After finishing a first degree in pharmacology at the University of Manchester I joined the Cardiovascular Research Group at the University of Nottingham, completing my PhD on platelet-endothelial cell interactions in 1995. I then spent five years as a Postdoc researching platelet-leukocyte interactions in health and disease at the University of Jena, Germany, followed by two at Merck in Darmstadt in the cardiovascular drug development programme. From 2001 I have been working as a lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton. 

Haematology, particularly haemostasis and thrombosis, platelet function in health and disease, transfusion science and blood groups. Aggregometry, platelet function tests, flow cytometry, endothelial cell culture. Pharmacology in the 1980s. 

Platelet inhibitory drugs in acute coronary syndromes, particularly P2Y12 purinoceptor antagonists, aspirin and aspirin-like drugs. Platelet involvement in coagulation, thrombin generation in plasma. 

I’m a member of the European Platelet Group, and an associate editor of the journal Platelets. I’m an occasional referee for the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
