About

Fay is currently Head of the Secondary Education Department, within the Institute of Education.  In this Principal Lecturer role, Fay has responsibility for all secondary initial teacher training, and related courses, including subject knowledge enhancement courses.  Previous to this Fay was the Subject Pathway Leader for Secondary Mathematics Education.

Prior to becoming a teacher educator, Fay worked in primary and secondary schools as a classroom teacher, advanced skills teacher, and mathematics consultant for Sandwell Local Authority.

Fay’s research interests are focused around teacher education and, in particular, the recruitment and retention of teachers to national priority subjects.  Fay is currently undertaking research for her Professional Doctorate concerned with the professional identity development of career changers, and non-traditional participants, entering the teaching profession.  This has developed from research undertaken for her MA (Education) dissertation into the recruitment of mathematics teachers.

Other research interests include the development of subject knowledge in secondary mathematics.  Through a funded project, Fay worked with local partnership schools on the development of subject specific feedback material and has since co-authored a published chapter on lesson feedback.
