During the last few years that I have spent teaching Interior Design I have found a satisfying mix of practical design and artistic expression, this has helped me to develop my own practice, expand my subject knowledge and to find innovative ways to communicate ideas.

I feel that through interior design I am able to explore many subjects through a wide variety of skills, both practical and theoretical. I enjoy working within a vibrant and stimulating department, and look forward to developing and expanding the reputation of student work, the course, and the school.

As a designer I draw inspiration from a wide range of 20th centaury and contemporary artistic and design movements, I generally adhere to the principle that design should follow function.

Like the early modernists of the 20th century I believe that truth to materials is paramount, within my own work I enjoy using man made materials such as plastics and composites, to create exciting and dramatic spaces whilst embedding the latest digital technologies.

Research interests

My work outside of my regular teaching commitments has focused around residential and temporary exhibition design, with a strong emphasis on the integration of digital technologies, I have strived to expand my knowledge of new and emerging technologies and cutting edge material practices.

‘’The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it.’’ Weiser.M (1991)

The relationship between individuals and their domestic technology is becoming increasingly involved, some would argue pervasive, but the technology we employ in our day to day lives are evolving the traditional notions of our homes. Ideals such as informality, adaptability, and the devolution of hierarchy are changing our domestic landscape and as such are a reflection of our evolving societies needs.
