Emma Bate graduated in September 2014 with a BA (Hons) in Dance and in little over a year she has gone from graduate to opening her very own dance studio!
We caught up with Emma to find out how the last twelve months have gone:
“Once I graduated I knew that I wanted to go into teaching as a career, but I didn't want to be based in one place all the time and knew that applying for a PGCE or something similar wasn't the right route into teaching for me.
So I decided to take a risk and go self-employed to build my dance school 'Inspire2Dance'. The skills I gained from studying at The University of Wolverhampton gave me the drive and ambition to believe I could make a success of anything I put my mind to.
This year in June I put on my first show entitled 'Time to Shine' and raised £360 for the Make A Wish Foundation. I took different exams such as my 'Associate Modern' through the NATD to allow me to enter my pupils for exams, and went on a variety of courses including Level 1 Primary Gymnastics to expand my knowledge as I had never trained in gymnastics before and think it is important to keep learning.
I started introducing more classes and began promoting myself through the use of social media, as well as handing out flyers and visiting local schools asking to give out letters with information about my classes.
The more classes I introduced meant the more money I needed to invest in advertising and hall hire costs etc.. and at times it was very difficult. I hired out community centres, leisure centres and church hall's to teach my lessons and hoped that one day I would have my very own studio...and a year on I have achieved that dream.
Over the Summer I have worked very hard refurbishing an office block into a beautiful studio to hold all my classes. I have been very lucky to have the support from my family and friends. The studio is due to open on Saturday 10th October 2015.
I am so proud of what I have achieved in the past year since graduating and cannot wait to hang my BA Hons Certificate in the studio with pride! Lots can happen in a year and I can't believe how fast this first year as a graduate has gone!''
