BA (Hons) Animation

Animation is a versatile, wide-ranging, expressive form. The creative opportunities are huge, open as this subject is to so many forms and methods. It combines visual aesthetics with sound, structured time and emotion. Animation can be entertainment, or a powerful voice for social and political statement. Equally, it can be incorporated within fine art practice or the language of advertising.

  • This course seeks to develop your technical knowledge and cultivate your understanding of movement, mostly through drawing.
  • You’ll learn the following software applications up to an industry standard: Maya, Toon Boom, After Effects, Flash, Photoshop, Painter and Premiere Pro.
  • You will familiarise yourself with computer-based and traditional animation techniques.
  • You will combine visual and sound skills together with structured time and motion.
  • You will hone your editing, creative use of sound, compositing and idea generating expertise.
  • You will develop a critical awareness of the subject and establish your own creative individuality.
  • You will explore a range of styles – we cover any approach to the art of animation, depending on your talents and skills.
  • We are one of only two courses in the UK that offers Motion Capture training
  • We are the only course in the UK with an on-going contract with CITV
  • Our course offers 2D and experimental techniques as well as 3D
  • The course is delivered via a variety of teaching methods, including studio and workshop teaching, seminars and presentations.
  • You will have the option to study Interactive Media and Video alongside Animation.

The animation industry

  • The animation industry is undoubtedly one the fastest and prospering industries in the world. There have been lots if developments and advancements in the animation technology. With the increase of satellite channels and Internet, the animation industry is also booming rapidly.
  • The rapid advancement of technology has made computer animation available to the masses.
  • The demand for animated entertainment has expanded with the increase in broadcasting hours by cable and satellite TV along with the growing popularity of the Internet.
  •  In the past, animation series were aimed at children aged nine and below. In recent years however, TV stations have been producing animation series for teenagers, adults and the whole family. Animation series like The Simpsons and King of the Hill have been successfully aired on primetime TV.
  • The major markets include the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Britain and Germany.
