Student lands prestigious scholarship

15/05/2013

Ehsan MohammadiEhsan Mohammadi, a PhD student in the third year of his doctorate, has been awarded the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship for 2013.

He will now fly to Vienna in July for the ISSI (International Society for Scientometrics and Infometrics) Conference to accept his scholarship, which will consist of $3,000 donated by the Eugene Garfield Foundation.

The purpose of the scholarship is to foster research in bibliometrics, scientometrics and informetrics by encouraging and assisting doctoral students in the field with their dissertation research.

Ehsan’s research aims to find new approaches for capturing the broader impact of research publications beyond citation analysis via identifying new metrics based on altmetrics resources. It also aims to validate the new measures through comparisons with traditional indicators.

Ehsan’s work has been conducted in collaboration with the University’s Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group (SCRG), founded in 2000 and specialising in the analysis of data on a large scale.

Speaking about his Scholarship award, Ehsan Mohammadi said: “I was absolutely thrilled to learn I’d been awarded the scholarship and I can’t wait to visit Vienna for the ISSI Conference. I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to Professor Mike Thelwall for his supervision and hard work within the SCRG in developing several pieces of software for data gathering and analysis from the web over the past few years”.
