Thousands to celebrate graduation

More than 4,000 University of Wolverhampton students will don caps and gowns to celebrate their achievements at graduation ceremonies this month.

Students and their families with gather at the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton to collect their degree scrolls.

A total of 18 ceremonies will be held, starting with the School of Art & Design on Thursday, 6 September 2012.

The final ceremony on Friday, 14 September 2012 will feature students from the .

Twelve people, including Olympic medal designer David Watkins, will also receive honorary degrees and fellowships in recognition of their achievements in their fields of expertise.

Every ceremony will be preceded by a procession of academic and senior staff, governors, honorary award recipients and invited guests through the city.

The University will be using the George Hotel, formerly the Varsity pub, for the first time during graduation.

Refreshments, graduation mementos and photographs will be on offer in the building, which the University recently bought and plans to transform.

Students and their families have also been invited to a drinks reception after each ceremony in the University’s main library, the Harrison Learning Centre.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating the hard work and dedication of our students as they graduate. As a University, we are committed to improving the life chances of our graduates and significantly enhancing their employment prospects, and these ceremonies provide the perfect opportunity to recognise their individual achievements as they move onto the next stage of their careers.

“We’re also looking forward to using The George for the first time as part of our graduation celebrations.”
