Specialist training for international organisation

A team of experts from an organisation which supports victims of conflicts around the world has completed a specially devised training programme at the University of Wolverhampton.

Clear Path International (CPI) provides rehabilitation and support to survivors of conflict and landmines in countries such as Afghanistan, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Five American representatives of CPI, three of whom currently work in Afghanistan, have completed a training programme at the University’s Telford Campus this week (Aug 20 – 24). The programme is focused on working with the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the European Union.

The tailor-made training is being delivered by the University’s Centre for International Development and Training (CIDT) and includes sessions on bidding for DFID and EU grants and contracts, and how to design, develop and deliver major projects.

Phil Dearden, Head of CIDT, said: “It’s been great working with such a dedicated and likeminded group of staff as the team from Clear Path International. The work they are doing on the ground in a number of countries is really amazing – we are really pleased to be trying to assist them in reaching out to other possible funding bodies such as DFID and the EU.”

CPI delivers assistance to survivors, mine risk education and capacity building programmes to people and organisations living and working in conflict-affected communities throughout the world.

Its work includes providing prosthetics and rehabilitation services; livelihood development; financial assistance for farming and small enterprises; and vocational training for people with disabilities in post conflict zones.

They have developed a particular speciality in building accessibility ramps and providing the related disability awareness training. They also provide capacity building services to local non-profit organisations working with disabled people.

The organisation has supported internationally recognised mine action initiatives since 2000. Based in Washington State, USA, Clear Path International currently operates in five locations: Afghanistan, Cambodia, Laos, along the Thai-Burma border and Vietnam.

The tailor-made course at the University is titled “Project and Programme Thinking Skills”.
