University to host international dance event

05/10/2010

The 20th Annual Meeting of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) will be held at the Birmingham Hippodrome from October 28 to 30 2010.

This unique conference is hosted by the University of Wolverhampton and the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

IADMS conferences are designed to enhance the treatment and training of dancers with the ultimate goal of improving dancers’ health, well-being, and performance.

The three-day event will include lectures, workshops, forums, case presentations, poster presentations, and movement sessions. There will also be an opportunity for health care professionals, dance educators, dance scientists, and dance movement specialists to network.

The conference is hosted by a different country each year, and this is the first time the University of Wolverhampton has been involved in hosting the event.

The University’s School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure offers a range of dance and performance courses and carries out world-leading research into dance science. From July 2011, the School will be housed in the new multi-million pound Performance Hub at the Walsall Campus, featuring new teaching and rehearsal spaces.

Dr Matt Wyon, Reader in Performance Science and UK Conference Lead, said: "We are honoured to be hosting the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science conference along with Birmingham Royal Ballet. This is the most prestigious conference in this field and provides us with the opportunity of showcasing our world-leading research and the Performance Hub.

"Objectives of the conference include providing participants with insights into the causes and treatments of musculo-skeletal problems in dancers, as well as strategies for prevention, and also enhancing their knowledge of the psychological issues that affect dancers.

2010 is a Year of Dance in Birmingham with the city hosting, among other events, the International Dance Festival and the British Dance Edition
