Vegan Society chief to give lecture

20/10/2009

Nigel Winter will present a seminar entitled ‘The role of a charity CEO’ at the University’s Compton Campus in Wolverhampton on Wednesday, 28 October 2009.

The event will take place in the Management Research Centre (MRC), room CA101, from 12.30pm – 1pm followed by half an hour for questions.

In the seminar, Nigel will talk about the role and challenges of operating as a Chief Executive Officer in a national charity and the specific operational aspects that the Vegan Society deals with.

Dr Silke Machold, Joint Head of the University of Wolverhampton Business School’s Management Research Centre, said: “The governance requirements of charities in the UK are as challenging, if not more so, than those of corporate entities. Nigel Winter's talk will provide some real insights into these challenges from his long practical experience. We are delighted that Nigel is visiting the MRC to share his insights with us."

Nigel Winter became a vegetarian when he was 16, and a vegan in his early 30s. He lived in Zambia as VSO volunteer, setting up a laboratory to teach local people how to make products such as soap from essential oils. He returned to the UK with his vegan ideals reinforced by his experience in Africa. When the Vegan Society relocated its national head office to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, Nigel became its Chief Executive.

The Vegan Society, the world’s first vegan body, was established in 1944 and employs only vegan personnel. It is responsible for issuing the vegan kitemark of assurance for non-animal products.

The talk is open to University staff, students and members of the public. There is no fee for this seminar but people wishing to attend can contact stephengreenfield@wlv.ac.uk
