The lecture will be held at the University on Wednesday, 14 January 2009 from 5pm to 7pm.Steven Frank

The University hosts a lecture each year to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27. This year, Steven Frank has been invited to visit the University of Wolverhampton for the first time to talk about his life during and after the Holocaust.

Lecture organiser Professor Dieter Steinert, Professor of Modern European History and Migration Studies at the University, said: “We are delighted to welcome Steven Frank to the University to talk about his experiences of the Holocaust. We are sure that this year’s lecture will provide an interesting insight into this period of history.”

Steven Frank was born on July 27 1935 in Amsterdam. After an idyllic childhood before the invasion of Holland, Steven was deported to Barneveld in March 1943.

Steven said: “I was then taken to Westerbork in September 1943 and finally to Theresienstadt concentration camp, which is now in the Czech Republic, in September 1944. I survived along with my two brothers and mother. We were liberated by the Red Army on May 9 1945.”

A month later the family journeyed through war-torn Europe and finally, with the help of the Red Cross, arrived in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. With the help of the American Garrison Commander there and two RAF pilots, the family were airlifted to the UK via Paris and later reunited with other family members in England.

All tickets for the free lecture at the University’s City Campus have now been allocated. Pupils from local schools and members of the public will be attending the event.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Lecture is supported by the Vice Chancellor’s office, the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences, the Graduate School and the History and Governance Research Institute (HAGRI).
