Mr Knight, the Minister of State for Schools and Learners, was given a tour of the building and met students and staff.

He said: “It is a real pleasure to be here and to carry out this honour. This is an excellent building which fits the excellent work going on in the School of Education. It is great to come to an institution that is doing such a good job in training teachers.”

University Vice Chancellor, Professor Caroline Gipps, said: “The University of Wolverhampton is committed to providing an outstanding learning environment for staff and students. We are delighted Jim Knight MP opened this new building, which is a welcome addition to the Walsall Campus.”

Students will benefit from an innovative social learning space, which provides free access to IT facilities in a relaxed environment. This features a Fairtrade food outlet, Go Eat World, which sells Fairtrade coffee, tea, orange juice and other products.

The building also houses the University’s Institute for Learning Enhancement (ILE), formerly known as the Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching. This collaborates with academics to strengthen educational research, curriculum innovation and work-based learning across the University. This will be led by new Director, Dr Glynis Cousin, who joined the University from her previous role as Senior Advisor at the Higher Education Academy in York.

The Walsall Campus is also home to students studying courses with the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure and the School of Health.
