Official signing builds on construction partnership

The University of Wolverhampton has built on its partnership with two leading construction bodies.
The University recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Local Authority Building Control (LABC).
CIOB is the world's largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership with members working across the world in the development, conservation and improvement of the built environment.
LABC is a not-for-profit membership organisation that represents all local authority building control teams in England and Wales, supporting members, homeowners, builders, developers, architects and agents involved in the construction industry.
Paul Hampton, Head of Architecture and the Built Environment at the University, said: “Officially cementing this partnership with a MOU will consolidate our existing informal, collaborative relationships. Not only does it provide assurance of co-operation, particularly relating to continued accreditation of courses, it will also offer students mentoring, placements, industrial “live” projects, work experience, volunteering and careers advice as well as support for Higher Degree Apprenticeships.”
Chris Blythe, CIOB Chief Executive and a graduate of the University, said: “With the ongoing developments such as Springfield taking place at the University this is a really positive step forward. The industry is not only suffering from a skills shortage, there is an issue with productivity and partnerships like these will be instrumental in getting the right skills in place to boost productivity.”
Paul Everall, Chief Executive of LABC, said: “The signing of this MOU is really important. Building control has traditionally lacked an academic underpinning in terms of training and development of building control people in Local Authorities and we’ve been looking to fill this gap for some time. Building control should play an important part in developing exemplar buildings and this provides us with an ideal opportunity to work on creating specific courses and to move towards online training to help students get the academic qualifications they need as well as professional membership of CIOB.”
The School of Architecture and Built Environment is currently working with the partners to develop a new Building Control Surveyor Degree course and a Building Control Surveyor ‘top-up’ course. The team is also currently working with LABC to accredit their on-line learning material and are looking to develop a collaborative Apprenticeship Trailblazer group.
