Snake expert joins scientists to explore basic instincts at pub event

19/10/2017

Science and Animal Behaviour lecturers from the University of Wolverhampton are holding an informal evening of discussion and demonstrations in a local city centre pub - exploring the theme of basic instincts.

Dr Martin Khechara, University Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science and Fellow of Public Engagement for STEM will be joining Animal Behaviour & Wildlife Conservation Lecturers, Chris Young and Ken Oliver alongside internationally renowned venomous snake expert and TV presenter, Mark O’Shea to explore the theme of ‘How Basic Are My Instincts?’

Science Re-public is part of a public engagement scheme which has seen the team from the Faculty of Science & Engineering visiting local schools and community venues to unravel the mystery of science – encouraging audience participation and interaction through physical demonstrations and showing science off through performance, theatre, illusions and mind tricks.

Dr Khechara said: “Our aim is to make science less highbrow by taking it into the heart of our community and performing it in a way that people can easily understand.

“The presenters will have 20 minutes to talk on a topic of their choice that explores the world of wild animals, debunk mysteries and show just how dangerous some of them can be all in confines of a local pub.”

The Science Re-public team will be at The Cuban Exchange on Thursday 19th October 2017 from 7.00 pm until 9.30 pm and the event is open to anyone over 18.  Follow the Science Objective (Science Shack) on YouTube and on Twitter @Scienceobj.

The next Science Re-public event will be held at the Giffard Arms on Thursday 2nd November 2017 where the team, in collaboration with Birmingham City University, will present an evening of adult only science comedy cabaret set in a post-apocalyptic Brexit Britain.  Tickets are £5 on the door and the event starts at 9.30 pm.
