Students enhance their legal credentials

The next generation of legal professionals have enhanced their career credentials at a University of Wolverhampton law fair.

More than 70 current students and graduates visited the law careers fair for for the chance to discover more about the legal services sectors from a variety of employers.

Organised by the University of Wolverhampton’s Law School, the Fair at the Lord Swraj Paul Building was attended by local, national and international firms of solicitors, Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Attendees also had the opportunity to find out about academic and vocational post-graduate study options at the University of Wolverhampton, including the Legal Practice Course and a range of Master’s degrees, and to hear about legal research tools offered by Lexis Nexis and Westlaw.

Students and graduates could also access support from the Careers Clinic, with advice on CVs and application forms, and could find out what the University’s Alumni Association and the students’ own Law Society have to offer.

There were two guest speakers - Jason Cordon-Bowen, a Crown Prosecutor, gave a talk on career paths with the CPS, andZhi Ong, from 'Aspiring Solicitors' also delivered a talk on securing employment after University.

Sukhninder Panesar, Head of the University’s Law School, said: "The Law School has a very strong commitment to employability which is enhanced by events such as this Law Careers Fair, as well as employability embedded into its new curriculum which provides legal education and training for tomorrow’s lawyers. This year’s fair saw two key guest speakers offering important details of opportunities in the Crown Prosecution Service and of events and employment opportunities to help encourage diversity in and access to the legal profession.

“Events such as the Law Careers Fair are a vital part of the Law School’s employability strategy which is embedded into the curriculum. Offering students the opportunity to engage with local and regional firms and demonstrate the talent available to employers.”

Employers in attendance on Wednesday, 22 November 2017 included: DWF LLP, FBC Manby Bowdler LLP, Lanyon Bowdler LLP, Slater & Gordon, Thornes Solicitors, Talbots Solicitors, Wolverhampton City Council, and Telford & Wrekin CAB.
