Why is the Midlands attractive to the Far Right?

22/05/2017

The growth of the Far Right in the Midlands will be debated at a University of Wolverhampton event.

Journalists, academics and representatives of the police and criminal justice system will discuss why the region is attractive to such groups and how significant a threat is this activity.

The one-day conference on Thursday, 1 June 2017 will feature presentations and contributions from leading experts from West Midlands Police, Birmingham and Walsall Councils and academia.

Professor of Security at the University of Wolverhampton, George Kassimeris, said: “The one-day conference will consider the Far Right in the Midlands and why the region has proved so attractive to such groups. As well as considering how significant a threat such activity is, we will look at what the response has been from the community and authorities and whether a different approach is required.

“The event aims to bring together academics, journalists, representatives from the policing and criminal justice system, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), charities and community activists.”

There will be presentations and contributions from:

  • Bob Spencer (Walsall Council)
  • Paul Betts (West Midlands Police)
  • Nigel Bromage  (Small Steps)
  • Razia Butt (Birmingham City Council)
  • Jonathan Peepall (West Midlands Police)
  • Paul Jackson (University of Northampton)
  • Mark Littler (University of Hull)
  • Leonie Jackson (University of Huddersfield)
