Artists illustrate creative collective in careers workshop

06/03/2017

Students from the Faculty of Arts worked collectively to create a joint piece of work when an internationally renowned group of artists delivered a workshop during Career Development Week.

Le Gun is a unique group of artist illustrators and designers who work together on each drawing they make, creating idiosyncratic imagery which blends a punk, occult, pop and surrealist aesthetic.

Established in 2004, the group met at London’s Royal College of Art.  As well as being the producers of a cult self-titled magazine, they are internationally recognised for their enigmatic installations, design projects and art shows.

Le Gun consists of artist illustrators, Bill Bragg, Chris Bianchi Neal Fox, Robert Rubbish, and Steph von Reiswitz along with two designers, Alex Wright and Matt Appleton.

Students from Fine Art, Illustration and Fashion & Textiles in the Wolverhampton School of Art took part in the day long workshop which focused on showing students how to work together, breaking down boundaries and inhibitions and recreating the studio environment allowing them to share their methods.

Ben Kelly, Senior Lecturer in the Wolverhampton School of Art, said: “The opportunity to work with successful, creative professionals is a great experience for students. Collaborative working with groups equips students with practical skills which are transferrable across to the workplace.”

Rachael McCamphill, Illustration student, said: “It’s been quite an eye opening experience – one of the Le Gun artists is one of my favourite illustrators and to see first-hand how they work has been super exciting.  It’s also really nice to work with other students at all levels and get involved with a something that’s not restrictive or restricted.”

Steph von Reiswitz, artist illustrator from Le Gun, said:  “We focus on creating one piece of work so the students are less precious about it and this frees them up to be more creative which is always a good thing.”
