Academics attend conference to explore educational innovation

27/07/2017

Staff from the University of Wolverhampton attended a conference in Spain recently to share their teaching and learning knowledge with peers from around the world.

Dr Rebecca Butler, Professor Nazira Karodia, Dr Martin Khechara and Sara Smith from the Faculty of Science and Engineering joined Jon Rhodes from the College of Learning and Teaching at EDULEARN17 in Barcelona.

The 9th annual International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies saw over 800 delegates from more than 80 countries sharing their knowledge on teaching and learning methodologies and educational innovations.

Staff chaired sessions on Augmented Reality & 3D Experiences as well as Experiences and Employability Workplace Training and presented research papers and posters showcasing research on learning spaces.

Sara Smith, Senior Lecturer in Cellular Pathology in the School of Biomedical Science and Physiology, said: “The conference provided excellent opportunities for networking which will hopefully lead to collaborative research projects in the future.

“It was great to put Wolverhampton on the map at such a prestigious event and showcase our extensive expertise in research, especially in relation to providing an enhanced learning environment for students who might feel daunted in a laboratory environment which is full of equipment and unfamiliar practices.

“Our research focused on using mobile technology as well as augmented reality to support students’ laboratory learning experience.

“Other members of the team presented their research on perceptions of what makes a good space to work and learn in. This research has provided useful insights into what students really think and hopefully will lead to the creation of even better spaces where students can both study and socialise.”
