Celebration of community engagement project

A £4,000 project to nurture religious and cultural integration in Wolverhampton has been celebrated at an event at the city’s University.

The LEAF (Language, exercise and food) was a student-run community engagement initiative within Wolverhampton.

Students and graduates from the University of Wolverhampton delivered 200 hours of English language sessions at various religious centres within the city.

More than 150 people took part in the project, which received funding from the Near Neighbours programme run by the Church Urban Fund.

Around 40 of the participants attended a special event hosted by the University Chaplaincy on Wednesday, 12 April 2017 to ‘graduate’ from the programme.

They received their Europass certificate, an English practice book and a £10 shopping voucher to celebrate their achievement.

Jon Elsmore, Dean of Students, said: “We are delighted that our students and graduates were able to deliver such a worthwhile and rewarding project within our community.

“All the participants benefitted enormously from the initiative, and our students and graduates gained valuable experience too.

“The celebration event was a great opportunity to celebrate everyone’s achievements.”
