Engineering students officially unveil Formula 3 Cup car

University of Wolverhampton (UWR) Race Team engineering students unveiled their new MSV Formula 3 Cup Championship racing car at the Bullring Shopping Centre in Birmingham City Centre.

As the only University competing in this season’s MSV F3 Cup competition, the Race Team will be competing in all 17 rounds over the next few months at world famous tracks including Spa Francorchamps, Brands Hatch, the home of the British Grand Prix, Silverstone, and Donington Circuit.

Last year, in their debut season, the race team students ran a Formula Renault 2.0 in the Monoposto 2000 Championship. The UWR team achieved 2 wins and 6 podiums, finishing in 4th place overall.

Engineering students are taught how to run a car professionally to the standard of a Formula 1 team under the help and guidance of Professional Motorsport Engineer, Matt Fenton, and Professional Driver and Team Mentor, Shane Kelly.

An investment of £12million in the University’s engineering facilities at its Telford Innovation Campus in Priorslee will see the creation of world class education facilities for University engineering students including industry standard design, development and testing facilities as well as motor racing workshops and two car bays to support the students’ work on the Formula 3 car.

David Tucker, Team Principal & Principal Lecturer in Motorsport at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “The massive investment that has gone into our facilities provides a really attractive course offering for students who want to study engineering. We have committed sponsors on board, students have their own car to work on and we’re competing in a fantastic championship with F3 Cup.”

The Formula 3 Cup car has a 2 litre high compression Mugen engine capable of 0-100 mph in 4 seconds, a carbon clutch, 270 BHP and compared to the car raced last year it is highly dependent on aero dynamics representing a step up in technology for students working on the vehicle.

The first race event of the season takes place on 23rd and 24th April at Donington Circuit.
