Race team geared up for motorsport engineering show

The University of Wolverhampton’s School of Engineering Race Team (UWR) are gearing up for the Autosport International 2016, the largest car racing show in Europe. Staff and students will be on hand to give advice and guidance to anyone interested in studying engineering at the University’s Telford Innovation Campus – and it’s hoping to drive up interest in its range of courses.

The motorsport event will be held at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, from Thursday 14th until Sunday 17th January 2016, catering for industry professionals and motorsport fans. The team from the University will be displaying their Formula Renault car, built and raced by students, alongside the Formula Student car, which is fully designed and built by the students and a full motion race track experience simulator supplied by Telford based company, Woote – a centre which provides conference facilities enhanced by dedicated motion simulation experiences.

David Tucker, Principal Lecturer for Mechanical Engineering (Automotive and Motorsport) at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We’re really excited to have a presence at this premier pre-season motorsport event which brings together the world of motorsport before the race season starts.

“We will be hosting a ‘Top Gear’ competition where visitors to our stand will be offered the chance to have a go at driving our Formula 3 car on a race track simulator and aim for the top of our very own leader board.

“We’ll be offering a range of prizes and there will be information on the range of courses available at our Telford Innovation Campus – including Aerospace, Automotive, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications, Mechanical, Mechatronics or Motorsport Engineering.”

The University has invested £12 million in transforming the engineering facilities at Telford, including creating new workshops with two car bays, benches and professional tools to support the students’ work on its Formula Renault racing car. Visitors to the show can find the UWR Engineering team on Stand 7102.
