University of Wolverhampton graduate gains a Beijing bronze

A British athlete who recently graduated from the University of Wolverhampton has won a bronze medal in Beijing.

Jarryd Dunn competed in the 4x400m relay for Team GB at the World Athletics Championships. He teamed up with Rabah Yousif, Delano Williams and Martyn Rooney to take third in 2:58.51mins.

The 23-year-old, who graduated with a BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science in 2013, tweeted: “Can't think of a better way to end what has been a pretty amazing season for me. I'm a World Championship Medallist!”

University of Wolverhampton Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer, said: “We are proud of all our graduates but Jarryd’s achievement really is exceptional and we would like to congratulate him on his success. We wish him well for the future and hope he achieves his aim of competing for his country in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.”

Dr Ian Lahart, Course leader of Sport and Exercise Science, added: “Jarryd was a great student and a pleasure to teach. He was hard-working both in the lecture hall and on the track.

“He was eager to test himself and volunteered for any of our research or laboratory practical’s that involved maximal exercise. He has obviously maintained his fantastic work ethic and applied himself to his training to produce this fantastic result. I’m sure he will continue to be a successful part of the team GB track and field squad in the future.”

The World Athletics Championships were Jarryd’s second major international competition of 2015, having represented Britain at the European Indoor Championships in Prague in March.

Jarryd, from Brownhills, has previously spoken of how the University was supportive of his goals: “At the University of Wolverhampton, everyone from the lecturers to the support staff were great. They were all extremely accommodating towards me and my athletics, and would allow me extensions on handing in work as my training and competition load increased – although the time management skills I picked up through my athletics career ensured I would always get my work completed on time.”

He said that graduating from the University was the best thing he had done with his life outside of athletics.
