University honours NHS specialists

Dr Matthew Brookes and Dr James Cotton are newly conferred members of the University Professoriate in the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing.  

Honorary Professorships are awarded to distinguished academics or practitioners who have demonstrated a commitment to an interest in the University’s academic life and who are actively associated with the University’s academic community.

The new professors will be passing on their experience and wisdom through guest lectures to inspire the next generation of doctors at the University of Wolverhampton. 

Professor Linda Lang, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing said: “We are delighted that Professor James Cotton and Professor Matthew Brookes have been honoured by the university.

“This reflects the excellent way we have been working with them and with the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust through research and developments to improve the quality of care for patients.”

Dr Matthew Brookes, clinical gastroenterologist at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust has become an honorary professor of Gastroenterology.

Dr Brookes has over 10 years of experience in Gastroenterology, he is an experienced endoscopist delivering diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Matthew Brookes completed his education at Bristol University (MBChB), the Royal College of Physicians of London and Birmingham University (PhD).

Dr James Cotton has become an honorary professor of Cardiovascular Science.  

Dr Cotton is a consultant interventional cardiologist based at New Cross Hospital’s Heart and Lung Centre in Wolverhampton. He is also director of the Research and Innovation department of The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust.

James Cotton undertook his undergraduate medical training at Kings College London and studied for his MD at University College and Kings College, London.

Dr Jonathan Odum, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust's Medical Director said: “The Trust was delighted with the conferring of the two Professorships and this reflected the academic standing and research achievements of Dr Cotton and Dr Brookes.

“The hospital and the University of Wolverhampton have a close relationship and are currently looking to consolidate further developments in research and education in the near future.”

Dr Brookes and Dr Cotton were both presented with their honorary professorships on September 8 at The Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton.
