University Academic cycles to extreme lengths for charity

Charity Cycle Tracy DavenportTracey Devonport, Reader in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Wolverhampton will be raising money for charity, along with her family, in a UK cycle challenge.

After already raising money in memory of her mother for breast cancer this year, Tracy is now aiming to raise £5,000 for Herriot Hospice Homecare.

Herriot Hospice Homecare is an independent Charity which works in partnership with local hospitals, doctors, nurses and social services, aiming to enhance the quality of life and enable patients with life-limiting illness.

As sport is not only her day job, but also her interest, she has roped in her father, Keith Devonport and sister, Kirsty Taylor to take part in the ultimate UK cycle challenge – cycling the UK from end to end.

The challenge begins at Land's End in Cornwall and finishes at John O'Groats, located in Scotland. The ride will cover over 1,080 miles in 12 days all to raise funds for the Herriot Hospice charity.

Tracey Devonport said: “Having lost my mum to a short battle with cancer in 2013, I wanted to do something extra ordinary in memory of her.

“I also wanted to give something back to Herriot Hospice for the amazing support given to me and my family during the most difficult time of our lives.

“In May, I also completed the ‘Moonwalk Marathon’ walk in aid of breast cancer research along with my colleagues at the University.

“We completed the walk in wet, windy and cold conditions, but it was more than worth it!

“And I’m sure my next challenge will feel just as rewarding, knowing I am doing something to contribute towards the charity that means so much to me and my family.”

In the past, they cycled as a family with mum Carol as a back-up driver. The family felt that cycling was befitting to select as an endurance challenge to raise funds in supporting Herriot Hospice.

The challenge will begin on the 14 June and are scheduled to reach John O'Groats on the 25 June.

Donate to sponsor the Devonport family and support Herriot Hospice.
