Students dare to be digital

Students from the University of Wolverhampton are one of just fifteen groups selected by a panel of industry experts for the final of the ‘Dare to be Digital’ competition held at the University of Abertay Dundee.

The university is being represented by team ‘Taleforge Studios’, a group led by undergraduates currently studying BSc (Hons) Computer Science, Games Development and Games Design. The group also has a team member from Stafford University who is studying Music Technology.

Taleforge Studios includes; Dean Farrington, Mike O'Raw, Richard Tonks and Dan Gross and Adam Fox as the team leader.

The team’s game concept is ‘World Eater’, a 3D sandbox destruction game. In ‘World Eater’ the human player takes control of a mythical creature, the ‘mongolian death worm’ and the player’s objective will be to consume objects, such as buildings in the game world.

Dr Thomas Hartley, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and academic mentor for the team at the University, said: “Our team have been working very hard on their game concept and have spent many hours refining it into the brilliant idea that has got them to the final. I cannot wait to see the finished product.

“In addition to team mentoring, the Faculty of Science and Engineering has been able to sponsor the group by loaning equipment and offering to support transport costs. This is just one example of how we support our students and help them to take advantage of opportunities.”

The nine week long contest is designed for University students and recent graduates, and sees teams working together to develop a functional prototype video game.

At the end of the contest, the three highest scoring teams go on to compete for the coveted BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ award.

The competition began on 16 June and runs until 10 August.
