Expert using gaming tech to improve construction industry

‌Dr David Heesom is the University’s Reader in Building Information Modelling – a rapidly emerging process of creating and using 3D digital models of construction projects.

Thanks to a grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering, he is to spend six months working on cutting-edge technology, which will allow construction professionals and facilities managers to use their mobile phones and tablets to optimize how they work on new build and renovation projects.

His six-month secondment project will see him working with Shrewsbury firm The Severn Partnership on new approaches to deliver Scan2BIM data – a process which uses high definition lasers to scan a building and replicate it as a 3D model on a computer.

Throughout the project, Dr Heesom will be looking at how technology used for computer games and that found on mobile phones and tablets can be used to increase the number of platforms able to use Scan2BIM information.

Dr Heesom said he intended to use the experience he will gain on the secondment to improve the quality of teaching and the employability of graduates in the field of construction and Building Information Modelling.

He said: “The secondment will give me the opportunity to work with the company, their clients and supply chain to develop cutting edge, practical, and useful techniques for interacting with BIM projects as the UK and international construction industry moves towards this method of working.

“It will provide the opportunity to become fully immersed in the industrial setting allowing full engagement with the company and the subject, which will lead to new opportunities for teaching materials and research.”
