International conference examines current research into Nazi persecution

Professor Dieter Steinert has co-organised the Beyond Camps and Forced Labour Conference which will take place at the Imperial War Museum in London next month (JAN).
The aim is to bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines who are engaged in research on all groups of survivors of Nazi persecution.

It is the fifth international multidisciplinary conference, and will examine current international research, building on areas previously investigated, as well as opening up new fields of academic enquiry.

Professor Steinert, a Professor of Modern European History and Migration Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences, said: “When in 2000 a group of friends and colleagues followed my invitation to discuss the idea of organising a conference on survivors of Nazi persecution, nobody could foresee that 15 years later we would open our fifth conference. From the very beginning, international response was overwhelming; and in January we will again welcome 100 speakers from all over the world. I am extremely grateful for all the support received over the years from my university to make this conference series a worldwide unique event.”
 
For the purpose of the conference, a 'survivor' is defined as anyone who suffered any form of persecution by the Nazis or their allies as a result of the Nazis' racial, political, ideological or ethnic policies from 1933 to 1945, and who survived the Second World War.

Papers will include topics such as forced labourers in central, east and south-east Europe, relief and rehabilitation, the legacy of euthanasia and medical experiments, rescuers and liberators and child survivors.

The conference will take place January 7-9.
