Admin worker exhibits artwork in major gallery

In her day job, Lynne Pennells works as the recruitment and events co-ordinator for the University of Wolverhampton, painting in the evenings and at weekends.

But now her hobby is taking the spotlight as several of her artworks are currently being exhibited in the Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

Lynne, a former graduate of the University’s School of Art and Design, has always been a keen artist.

She said: “Although I didn’t decide to follow that career path I am very grateful for the skills I gained through my course.

“In particular, the research, presentation and communication skills which have helped me to develop and talk about the work I’m now producing.

“Personal circumstance led me to become a self-taught painter around 2005 and I’m now looking to turn my hand to sculpture.

“I still get the same thrill as I did the first time I saw my painting on a gallery wall, my family are very proud.”

The exhibition has been organised by the Wolverhampton Society of Artists and features two of Lynne’s paintings: “Fulfilling at dream – Mum at 60” and “Pirate Show Dancer”.

For one of the works, she captured her mother during a trip on the Orient Express.

Lynne said: “Mum had a stroke when she was 42, leaving her with short term memory damage - which can make our relationship challenging.

“However, for one day, we were able to share our love of trains, fine food and each other’s company. I tried to capture her moment of joy and my pleasure of seeing her happy as she realises a dream.”

The exhibition takes place at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery until January.
