Students claim language prize

The ‘Japanese Speech Contest’ saw individuals and teams from several universities take part in the event held at Regent’s College, London on 2 March 2013.

Marta Carbonell Gimenez and Joseph James Ray – who are both studying Japanese at Beyond Basic level at the University – received an award for their effort in the “Group Presentation” category.

Their presentation, entitled ‘Introduction to the Mythological Creatures of Great Britain’, saw them land the ‘Folklore Prize’ at the conclusion of the event.

Other universities competing in their section included the University of Warwick, the University of London and Imperial College, London.

They qualified for the competition after progressing through a heat as one of the top four groups out of the 15 that were competing.

Mitsue Arai, the pair’s tutor at the University said: “I’m very proud of Marta and Joseph and wish to congratulate them on their success. The University of Wolverhampton places a large emphasis on its languages courses, and the achievement of our students demonstrates the high level of language teaching available here.”

Joseph Ray, speaking after the event, said: “It was a huge honour to represent the University of Wolverhampton in this competition. I would like to thank the BATJ and the Japan Foundation for organising the event, as well as everybody connected with my course for their hard work and support.”
