University takes science to the streets of Wolverhampton

Following on from the success of Sci-Fest last year, the University is running the week-long event again this year.

The event includes a week of events aimed at school pupils of various ages and concludes with a public family day.

New to the event this year is the Street Science- Science Shack. This will see staff from the University running activities and performing experiments to demonstrate the wonder of science and technology.

The event, on Friday 14 June between 10:30am and 4pm, will take place in the mobile “Science Shack” in Wolverhampton City Centre’s Queen Square.

Members of the public will have to chance to see and get involved with interactive experiments, learn about the science of space, watch an ethanol rocket being created and generally see lots of things go bang and flash.

Dr Derek Walton, Associate Dean of the School of Applied Sciences, said: “After the success of the first Sci-Fest last year we were keen to bring a new element to the table this year.

“As well as the schools events and public family day we have the Street Science Day and we’re hoping people in the city centre will come and see us and get involved.

“The whole idea of Sci-Fest is to show people that science and technology is both interesting and fun and we hope as well as enjoying what is on offer, people will learn something new as well.

“We’ve got some great activities lined up including some experiments with liquid nitrogen.”

The Street Science-Science Shack marks the first day of Sci-Fest and also aims to raise awareness of the University’s new Faculty of Science and Engineering, which launches in August.

Sci-Fest runs between 14-22 June 2013.
