University rooms given top tourism award

03/12/2013

Accommodation offered by the University of Wolverhampton has been given a top award by tourism experts.

The Innovation Campus at the University’s Telford site, has been awarded a three-star rating by VisitEngland, the English tourist board.

The accommodation offers 200 former student bedrooms, which have been refurbished for business guests, leisure guests for short stays and conference delegates, available for hire all year.

Professor Ian OakesNow tourist board VisitEngland has assessed the site and awarded it a three-star campus accommodation rating – the second-highest rating which can be given to campus sites.

The accommodation was formerly used as student bedrooms but was refurbished following the increasing demand for business and leisure accommodation in the Telford area.

This growth was the result of development in the area’s Southwater expansion project and more exhibitions and trade fairs being held in Telford.

Event organisers are able to book for groups of up to 200 people to stay at the Telford Innovation Campus, plus a further 150 economy rooms are also an option, making logistics much easier to organise when booking one venue.

The accommodation has also been recently used for the University’s Hotel Project, where degree students are able to gain up to 100 hours work experience over a 12-week period, using the accommodation to perform tasks like event co-ordination, marketing projects and administering the on-line reservations service working with the conference department at the Telford Campus.

Professor Ian Oakes, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and External Engagement said: “This is a real achievement and demonstrates both the quality of the accommodation we offer and the care and attention our staff pay to maintaining it.

“It shows the commitment we have to working with the wider community and to providing opportunities and facilities to, people, businesses and organisations.”
