Students take on international zumba challenge

13/04/2012

Energetic University of Wolverhampton students will be linking up with their counterparts in Japan, Malaysia and Northern Cyprus for a zumba challenge.

The special challenge is part of the University’s annual International Festival at the Walsall Campus on Wednesday, 18 April 2012.

The Festival has a number of sporting activities to celebrate the forthcoming London Olympics, including a mini-Olympics competition featuring the 100 metres, high jump, 110 metres hurdles, long jump and relay and a 6-a-side football tournament.

An Olympic poem has been commissioned by the University for the event, and will be read by Wolverhampton alumnus and poet Ian Henery, and an opening ceremony will feature Russian singer Dora.

Students will join their peers at higher education institutions in Malaysia, Japan and Northern Cyprus for the zumba challenge and will be linked via live satellite.

Other highlights include a professional Bollywood dance workshop, breakdancing demonstrations, a cricket workshop, Morris dancing and culture stalls for art, music, fashion and food.

The event, organised by the University’s International Centre and students from the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure, will take place in the Walsall Campus Sports Centre from 10am to 4.30pm.

Jo Gittens, Director, International, said: “The annual International Festival is a celebration of the diverse cultures of our students, who come from over 100 countries. The aim of the event is to promote internationalisation, cultural awareness and community health and wellbeing within the University. The Festival is open to all students and this year’s varied programme has something for everyone.”
