Copany to represet UK manufacturing excellence at Sciecne Museum

19/04/2012

A company that has developed environmentally friendly roof tiles has been selected to take part in an exhibition demonstrating the very best of British manufacturing this summer.

The Green Roof Tile Company, supported by the University of Wolverhampton, will feature in the Government’s Make it in Great Britain exhibition at the Science Museum during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Having beaten competition from hundreds of UK companies, The Green Roof Tile Company, based in Telford, will showcase its latest manufacturing products and educate visitors about the value of manufacturing to UK business.

The exhibition is the culmination of the Make it in Great Britain campaign - an initiative launched last year by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills which aims to challenge outdated opinions and transform the image of modern manufacturing.

The Green Roof Tile Company, in collaboration with the Caparo Innovation Centre at the University of Wolverhampton, has designed and manufactures Envirotile, a recycled polymer roofing system that offers unrivalled technical performance along with excellent eco-credentials.

Envirotile utilises the latest in recycled materials technology to produce roofing products manufactured from polymer containing over 70% reprocessed polypropylene.

The Envirotile roofing system comprises of: tiles, verge clips, ridge caps and undertrays. The tiles themselves weigh approximately 80% less than conventional concrete roof tiles, so are less expensive to transport to site and easier for installers to carry. The roofing system works on a flexible interlocking tongue and groove principle and can be laid using traditional methods and secured with galvanised nails or screws.

Professor Andrew Pollard, Caparo Innovation Centre, said: “This is a tremendous accolade for The Green Roof Tile Company and the University of Wolverhampton. The Make it in Great Britain exhibition will showcase the most innovative aspects of British manufacturing at a time when the eyes of the world will be on London.

“Envirotile will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with exhibitions from companies such as Airbus, Jaguar Land Rover, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, GKN and Mars. Envirotile is a British product from concept through to manufacture and it represents all that is good about British ingenuity and showcases the way in which the private sector and academia can collaborate to produce world leading products.

“We are looking forward to helping to show the general public what the manufacturing industry is really all about, and we hope that lots of people from the West Midlands will come to the exhibition to support us.”

The opportunity to showcase in the exhibition was open to manufacturing companies nationwide, with organisers keen to raise awareness about the dynamic, advanced and innovative industry that exists in the UK today.

Business Minister Mark Prisk said: “Manufacturing accounts for 8 per cent of total UK employment and well over half of export goods, yet current perceptions of the industry are out of date and do not reflect that reality. We have selected a really exciting mix of exhibits, and I hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition and see all of the great examples of British design and manufacturing – it will be spectacular.”

Ian Blatchford, Director of the Science Museum added: “We’re incredibly excited to be hosting the Make it in Great Britain exhibition this summer. The Science Museum and its world leading collections demonstrate some of the greatest engineering achievements of the last 200 years. We hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition, and see at first-hand how innovation in British manufacturing is still thriving today.”

The exhibition will be open from 24 July to 9 September, and is free to visit. For more information please visit www.bis.gov.uk/makeitingreatbritain.
