Employers pick creative graduates

14/07/2011

Employability has always been a central focus for students on the BA (Hons) Visual Communications and many of the 2011 cohort have actively pursued jobs in the design industry long before their course finished.

The creative professions can be a competitive jobs market, however the graduating class of 2011 are proving to be no exception to the University of Wolverhampton’s successful employment rate.

A total of 19 students out of just over 60 had secured employment or places on education courses within just three weeks of their course ending. Now, a few weeks on and a total of 24 are already in design roles, while the majority of the other graduates are in other forms of employment and actively seeking work in the creative professions.

Jessica Glaser, Senior Lecturer in Graphic Communication from the School of Art & Design, said: “Our course alumni have a formidable record in speedily gaining fulfilling employment within the creative professions. Confident graduates possess an impressive diversity of transferrable skills that equip them well for life after University - skills that are certainly appreciated and much in demand with employers.”

Since undertaking their final exhibit and highly acclaimed, self-funded design workshops at the Custard Factory in Birmingham, the creative students have been actively pursuing their professional design ambition to great effect.

Graduate Lisa Barrett said: "I'm delighted to be working as a graphic designer for Sixth Story. I really like how they work and think that it will give me a good range of experience in my first professional design role."

Kate Farrell, graphics graduate and winner of the new Express and Star Award for Digital Editorial Design in Graphic Communication added: “I am thoroughly enjoying working at the Bromford Group. I'm working with a great team and I'm getting a varied range of projects to design."
