Head of UCAS visits Wolverhampton

Mary Curnock Cook OBE visited Wolverhampton on Monday, 22 August 2011 and was given a tour of the University’s Clearing call centre. She also met the Vice-Chancellor Professor Geoff Layer and other senior staff during her visit.

The University was inundated with calls on Thursday following A-Level results, with 120 staff members taking 10,500 calls on the first day.

Mary, who received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Wolverhampton in 2002 in recognition of her support for the development of educational programmes in Inn-keeping and Licensed Retail Management, said: “Like other universities and colleges which are members of UCAS, Wolverhampton has managed this difficult year magnificently. It is easy to forget that the main pressures during confirmation and clearing fall on the professionals who manage admissions at the sharp end.”

Jane Nelson, Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs, said: “We were delighted to welcome Mary to Wolverhampton and be able to give her a tour of our busy Admissions and Clearing call centre.

“Our staff worked extremely hard to handle a high volume of phone calls following the A-Level results and I would like to thank them for their efforts and professionalism. We have had a very successful few days, and nearly all our places were full without going into Clearing.”
