Trainee solicitors set up free legal advice clinic

27/05/2010

The advice clinic, supported by Talbots Solicitors, is run by law graduates studying the Legal Practice Course (LPC), which is the vocational stage of training for solicitors.

Under the supervision of Senior Partners from Talbots Solicitors, students are able to offer members of the public advice on a range of legal matters. Available on a drop-in basis at the WLV Shop in the Victoria Arcade of the Mander Shopping Centre, the legal clinic is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

Senior Partner from Talbots Solicitors, Martyn Morgan, said: “Talbots Solicitors has enjoyed a long relationship with the University’s Department of Law and our involvement in this pioneering project means that together we can give something back to the community.

“The legal clinic is a great opportunity for students to develop essential client care skills whilst under the supervision of qualified practitioners and we are confident that the public of Wolverhampton will benefit from their combined knowledge and skills.”

Associate Dean for the School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications, Lynn Leighton-Johnstone, said: “I am proud to be part of an initiative that brings together the University, the city and the local legal profession in a way that adds value. It also demonstrates the contribution the University makes to the region and its ability to build relationships with business and employers.”

The legal help clinic is one of a wide range of free activities to be held in the University’s new shop. Run by the School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications, ‘WLV’ has been developed in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council and the Wolverhampton City Centre Company to help tackle the increasing number of empty retail units within the city centre.

Talbots Solicitors also runs a series of free services from their offices across the Black Country.

The University of Wolverhampton has received support for the shop from Kim Gilmour from the Wolverhampton City Centre Company and Katie Fellowes from the Mander Centre Management Company.
