Young designers exhibit at University

Creative pupils from across Wolverhampton are to showcase their design ideas at the city’s University.

The A-Level Design Show at the University of Wolverhampton gives Year 12 and 13 students the opportunity to showcase their projects in Product Design.

This year’s show will feature work from students at Moreton School, Heath Park Business and Enterprise College, Wednesfield High School and St Edmund’s Catholic School in Wolverhampton.

Pupils were challenged to investigate, design and make a range of consumer products and ideas for buildings, such as redesigning their school or a new terminal for Birmingham International Airport.

Dr Bryony Conway, Dean of the School of Art & Design, said: “Good design is essential to the creative industries. We are proud to support and encourage design achievement in Wolverhampton secondary schools.”

Education Partnerships at the University is sponsoring two prizes for the best project. Staff members from the University’s Schools of Art & Design and Engineering and the Built Environment will each choose a winner for this prize, and two runners-up.

This is the fourth time the University has hosted this event, which is organised in collaboration with Leanne Mee, Head of Technology at Wednesfield High School.

Leanne said: “Since we launched the A-Level Design Show in 2007 it has had a major impact on the quality of work produced by our students. The show offers a real opportunity for students to showcase their work in a professional environment. The show has grown in success and is a lovely way for students, parents, teachers and others affiliated to the schools to celebrate all their hard work.”

Phil Harris, Director of Recruitment and Lifelong Learning from the School of Engineering and the Built Environment, said: “We are delighted with the success of the last three exhibitions and glad that we are able to provide the opportunity again this year for budding designers to exhibit their work in areas such as product design, graphics and materials technology.”

The show will take place at the School of Art & Design building (Fifth floor, MK Building) at the University’s City Campus. The preview evening and prize-giving ceremony will take place at 6.30pm on Thursday, 10 June 2010. Public viewing is available on Friday, 11 and Saturday, 12 June from 10am until 2pm.

The School of Art & Design Degree Show will be taking place at the same time, and the University’s Open Day is also being held on Saturday, 12 June.
