Gifted biomedical science students awarded prizes

Two talented students from the University of Wolverhampton will be rewarded for their outstanding academic work by Trustees of the Paycare Charity Trust at a special ceremony.

First year winning student, Katy Stanger, from Sutton Coldfield and second year winning student, Govinder Shergill, from Dudley will each receive £400 from Paycare Charity Trust chair, David Clegg.

Trustees of Wolverhampton-based Paycare Charity Trust annually award prizes to the highest achieving student in the first and second years of Biomedical Science undergraduate study programmes at the University’s School of Applied Sciences.

The prize giving ceremony takes place on Wednesday 3 March, 2010 at 12 noon in the Council Room at the University of Wolverhampton, Wulfruna Street, Wolverhampton.

Dr Ruth Shiner, Head of Biomedical Science & Physiology Department at the University, said: “The University is extremely appreciative of the Award Scheme, which is now in its nineteenth year.

“The BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Science attracts many students from the local area and provides education and training for employment in hospital and medical research laboratories. University staff are very proud of the outstanding academic achievements of Katy and Govinder, who were nominated for the Paycare Charity Trust Prize, particularly as this is the second consecutive year that Govinder has received the award.

“Katy and Govinder are delighted and grateful for the generous prize which aims to encourage them towards their career ambitions for the future and the hearty congratulations of all their tutors is offered to both students. The School of Applied Sciences would like to offer sincere thanks to the Trust for their support and encouragement over the last 19 years and they look forward to continuing this successful relationship in the future.”

David Clegg, Chairman of the Charity Trust, said: “We are pleased to be able to continue with our support in respect of these students who will, in the long term, contribute to developments in research and treatments. Wolverhampton is recognised for its advancements in Medical Science and we are proud to be able to award these prizes.”
