Helping hand for new students

29/01/2009

The University’s Student-2-Student mentoring scheme is holding a promotional day on Thursday, 5 February 2009 in the Millennium City Building foyer on City Campus, between 11am and 2pm.

This scheme is a peer support service to help first year students become orientated to the University, the course, their subject and where they are living.

Co-ordinator Matthew Bates said: “It's about creating a positive student experience, helping people settle into a new and different living and learning environment.

The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the scheme to both staff and students; recruit mentors and mentees; to distribute information and gain ideas on areas of interest.”

There will be student mentors available on the day for staff and students to discuss ideas and share experiences. Mentors and mentees can build upon their existing skills and share these with others. The mentor training helps to build upon students’ communication skills, confidence levels, time management and interpersonal skills.
