Uni ready for thousands of calls

20/08/2009

Wolverhampton is one of the universities taking extra students following the Government’s recent announcement of additional places in science, technology, engineering and business subjects.

The University has 201 extra places available through the Government’s New Industry, New Jobs policy. Students can apply via the normal route of Clearing on the University’s hotline number - 0800 953 3222*.

Around 60 people have been staffing the phones since 7am this morning, and an online chat service for students has been live since midnight via the University’s website – www.wlv.ac.uk

Paul Travill, Academic Registrar, said: “We have already reached our targets for most of our teacher training, nursing and social work courses. We expect to recruit around 1,000 students on a range of courses through the Clearing process.

“We would encourage students who are interested in a range of subjects to call our hotline number, where staff will be on hand to offer advice. As well as students leaving school and college, we can also offer a range of study options to applicants who are considering entering higher education this year as a result of the local employment situation.”

The number of home and EU applicants that have already accepted places at the University of Wolverhampton via UCAS is up by about 30% compared to last year.

In 2008 the University of Wolverhampton received over 3,200 calls on the first day of Clearing and recruited over 1,500 students through the Clearing process.

21% of accepted places are from mature students over the age of 25, which is an increase of 1% over last year.
