National awards for students

 The University achieved the highest number of winners and commendations in the Xcel Student Awards 2008, which recognise and celebrate the achievements of students from a multi-ethnic or minority group background, and who have demonstrated excellence.Norah Goodreid, Dean of School Brian Mitchell, and Anne-Marie Goodreid‌
 
Anne-Marie Goodreid has been named joint winner of the Xcel Law Student of the Year award. Anne-Marie, 35, from Staffordshire, returned to University after being seriously injured in a car accident, and graduated with a BA (Hons) Studies in Law from the School of Legal Studies in September.
 
‌Bernadette Quick, from Wolverhampton, has won the Xcel Business & Commerce Student of the Year award. Bernadette, 40, is studying for a BA (Hons) Marketing part-time with the and is also a member of staff at ‌the University’s School of Engineering and the Built Environment. Bernadette has faced many personal challenges, but returned to education after working and is on track for a First Class Honours degree.Bernadette Quick
 
Another student, Nazmin Iqbal, was commended in the same category. Nazmin, ‌from Dudley, gained a first class honours degree BA (Hons) Business Management and was awarded the Hutchison Memorial Prize at the graduation ceremony in September. Nazmin, 24, has mobility problems and uses a wheelchair, and needs the support of a note-taker during classes. Her performance at University was of an exceptionally high standard.Nazmin Iqbal
 
Also commended was BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice student Hannah Bryant, 30, from Worcester. Hannah, from the University’s School of Health, was recognised in the Xcel Healthcare Student of the Year Award. Serge Sanghera from the School of Art & Design was commended in the Xcel Media and Creative Arts category. Serge, 35, from Whitmore Reans, gained a First Class a BA (Hons) Ceramics and received two awards at graduation – the Craftline Award for Excellence in Ceramics and the Ibstock Brick Ltd Award in Architectural Ceramics.
 
Dean of Students, Jon Elsmore, put forward the students for the prestigious awards. He said: “The University is delighted that five of our students have been recognised for these high profile awards. The Xcel Student of the Year Awards are positive in recognising the challenges and achievements from multi-ethnic and other minority groups, groups that are well represented at this University and we are proud of. 
 
“This University has always been proud to support and encourage participation in higher education by a diverse community of students and these awards recognise how tough it can be to make it  - but also how many students do succeed.”
 
The students will receive their awards at a gala awards evening at the Tower Hotel in London on Monday, October 6, 2008.
 
Xcel, a careers e-magazine for multi-ethnic and minority group students, launched the awards to promote successes and raise aspirations amongst multi-ethnic student groups and prospective students.  
 
The awards are open to all universities, and nominations were considered on both academic achievement and personal development and achievement.
