Military history under the spotlight

07/10/2008

Professor John Buckley will present the lecture, entitled the Loneliness of the military historian, on Wednesday, 15 October 2008 at 6pm.

Military history is a popular subject for books, documentaries and even computer games. But in his lecture, Professor Buckley, from the University’s School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences, will argue that it was viewed with scepticism until recently.

He said: “Military history was viewed with considerable suspicion and scepticism in universities, both in Britain and the USA, and until the 1990s professional military historians were few and far between.

“In the lecture, I will explore the problems and difficulties this has created for our understanding and interpretation of the past and how we relate to the present and our future.”

The lecture will take place in the Millennium City Building Lecture Theatre at City Campus. For more information and directions, visit www.wlv.ac.uk/publiclecture or contact The Graduate School on 01902 32 3344.
