Professor Michael Finnissy will visit the University’s City Campus on Wednesday, 19 November 2008 to give a talk entitled ‘the background to new complexity’.
The talk will look at music from an historical perspective, beginning with the evolution of complexity in music in the early 14th Century and progressing to post World War II Britain and the swinging sixties. The lecture will also look at the German style of music and the development of European ‘experimental’ music.
Professor Finnissy is a highly regarded composition teacher and is currently Professor and Chair of Composition at the University of Southampton.
Professor Finnissy said: “In the public lecture, I will consider complexity and simplicity as critical terms in music.”
The lecture will take place in the Millennium City Building Lecture Theatre on City Campus at 6pm. For more information, visit www.wlv.ac.uk/publiclecture or call The Graduate School on 01902 32 3344.
